This is my final project for the Minor in Writing program.  It is a different type of writing than I've ever done before - the goal being to combine elements of a personal narrative with academic argumentation, in the form of a research-based essay.

Like the individual parts that work together to make this portfolio, this project utilizes many different aspects of writing I've acquired over the years to create one, unique image.

I've chosen to write about World of Warcraft, eSports, and the social connections that exist in online group environments. With the rise of eSports lately and the increased attention competitions have received, one thing I've noticed is a large focus on the monetary value of the events and/or the publicity that can be drawn from large-scale eSports events. In other words, there is an air of "embracing eSports is just common sense!" to the discussions that I feel neglect to mention what also makes such teams and experiences human.

I know WoW is not the first thing to jump to mind when one hears about eSports, but WoW is what I know and what I have experienced. It's most familiar to me, and I'd like to keep the project rooted in WoW - eSports are the backdrop, but WoW is still the focus, if that makes sense.
