"eSports" is the term given to competitive online games played for sport, often at a professional level.  Like athletic sports, eSports are not limited to just the professional level; eSports games can be played at all levels.  From the casual player who has no intent to compete, all the way to the professional player who will participate in tournaments with prize pools in the millions of dollars, there is a broad range of players among all eSports games.

eSports games can also be played by a varying number of players.  Some eSports focus on one-on-one competition, while many revolve around teams of five players - though some games feature competition between even more!

What nearly all eSports share in common is a focus on dedicated players competing, learning, and coordinating.  For those games that involve competition between teams, those teams often become more than just a collection of players interacting behind screens; they become a unit, companions, and a close-knit group of friends.

The rise of one eSports game, League of Legends, when compared to the historical growth of American Football demonstrates how popular eSports are becoming.
